Why put something cold on a bump?

Reduces the surface temp. and thus there is less swelling because the blood flow is reduced (temporarily) to the area because it shrinks vessels and capillaries and also, to some extent, makes the blood in the area less viscous. The last part may or may not contribute to a reduction in swelling, but it seems to make a little bit of sense.
