Any suggestions on getting rid of rebound migraines?? Help me please!!!?
Question:
Answers:
Many commonly used immediate relief medications, when taken in large enough amounts, can cause rebound headaches. Medications once thought of as "safe" are turning up as the likeliest culprits. These include:
Aspirin
Sinus relief medications
Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as Aleve, Motrin (or ibuprofen).
Codeine and prescription narcotics
Over-the-counter combination headache remedies containing caffeine (such as Anacin, Excedrin, Bayer Select)
Ergotamine preparations (such as Cafergot, Migergot, Ergomar, Bellergal-S, Bel-Phen-Ergot S, Phenerbel-S, Ercaf, Wigraine and Cafatine PB)
Butalbital combination pain-relievers (Goody's Headache Powder, Supac, fioricet)
While small amounts of these medications per week may be safe (and effective) -- at some point, the continued medication use can lead to the development of low grade headaches that just will not go away.
Follow your treatment plan. Avoid taking medications that have not been ordered by your doctor. Let your doctor know what nonprescription medications or herbs you may be taking.
Reduce emotional stress. Take time to relax and take time away from stressful situations. Learn relaxation skills, such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation.
Reduce physical stress. Proper rest and sleep will allow you to deeply relax so you can face the stressors of the new day. When sitting for prolonged periods, get up and stretch periodically. Relax your jaw, neck and shoulders.
Exercise regularly. Get at least 20 minutes of exercise three times a week.
Keep a regular routine. Eat meals and snacks at about the same times every day, and get enough sleep at night.
Quit smoking. Smoking can trigger headaches and make any headache, especially cluster headaches, worse. Ask your doctor for information about smoking cessation programs in your community.
Seek help when you are unable to cope. Talk to a friend, family member, religious or health care professional if your problems are getting to you.
Know your headache triggers. Keep a headache diary to keep track of what triggers your headaches and avoid these triggers in the future.
Preventive therapy. Women who often get headaches around their menstrual period can take preventive therapy when they know their period is coming
try staying hydrated, oj works well. also having some caffine/coffee works wonders too. i also get rebound headaches~sometimes just sleeping is the best answer too!
A friend started doing lots of sports and he avoided smoking and coffee. Worked for him, he played squash.
Always look to your diet to help with pain in your body. What kinds of things are you eating? I would keep a journal of what you eat for 5 days. Just jot down some quick notes. When you have the headache...look at your journal and see what you ate last. I used to suffer from horrible migraines and they pretty much all went away when I started eating a Raw plant based diet. Maybe this will help you, too.
Hello, Mrs Bumpy, I used to have migraines for weeks on end and then they would go for a day or two then come back for weeks again. It was a pretty painful time. I had been to chiropractors, naturopaths, etc etc. I had had enough.
So I told my body to stop doing it. I was over it all. This was a huge time in my life. Believe it or not. But it really happened. The body is reflecting how you are feeling about yourself, the world and what is going on in your life. Look at all these things. Make changes, and make choices.
Hi from a fellow migraine suffer. You are getting rebound migraines because you have over medicated yourself. 1st, are you on a daily medication, such as topalmax? This drug or others like it can prevent you from having migraines. 2nd step is to find a drug to stop the migraine like, relpax or imatrex. Your doc can help you find the dosage right for you. I know this stinks. If you are finding that the migraine is lasting longer than 2days and you have taken your Rx you need to contact your doc so that they can give you something stronger, it may even mean a trip to the ER. Always follow the directions on the box or the plan that you have laid out with the Doc, I've been there before, curled up in one the bathroom floor, throwing up for days after taking my meds and it sucks!! Good Luck :)
I had this same issue for years. Went to several doctors with little help. Finally One Doctor told me to do the following: Stop taking all prescribed meds. (This really scared me as I was on blood pressure / hormones and migrain meds..) I had nothing to loose really - pain every day was really getting to me. I stopped taking everything like he said. He instructed me to begin taking Ibprofuen 3 times a day - three in the morning, three at lunch and three before bed. I did this for one month. Slowly over the next month, the headaches began to disappear. Over the next month I tappered off the ibprofun. I hardly ever have a migrain now! Amazing and simple! Now when I do feel one coming on, my migrain med works nearly instantly. Try it! What can it hurt. Hope you get better
I had so many migraines, I thought I had a brain tumor. I went to an internal medicne specialists and they ran all types of tests. When we were going over the results, I was having a migraine. He couldn't figure out the cause. They got so intense, I went to a particular type of Chiropractor. The method he used is taught only at the Palmer School of Chiropractic. The first adjustment I had, I thought the top of my head just exploded. After that the pain was less. From there after, for 6 months I saw him two to three times a week. Headaches diminished over that time and I have been free of them for 30 years. The Palmer school Drs. only adjust the neck; it doesn't matter what part of the body is out of allignment. Another friend of mine who was a Chiropractor would try to twist the neck. It never did work. Ask specifically for a Chiropractor who uses this Palmer method.
