Back straightening contraptions?

Question:
The ones that you wear over your chest and back but under your clothes.Do they work and how.You usually see them advertised in newspaper supplements.

Answers:
Hi just to give you a little more info on those "back contraptions" the harness will not only be uncomfortable... it will only weaken the muscle even more. Your body will rely on the brace and your postural strength will diminish. The best thing you can do is try to strengthen your postural muscles by exercising them. But before you even get to the gym to start... make sure you don't suffer from spinal deformities such as scoliosis, lordosis or kyphosis (different curvatures of the spine)... if none exists, try simply elevating your sternum up at a 45 degree angle. Imagine a fishing line attached into your chest bone and someone at the end of that line is pulling you up to a 45 degree angle. Try doing that first as much as possible cause you need to create not only strength but muscle memory as well. You have to make a conscious effort in order to change your postural behavior.

let me know how things work out
They are very uncomfortable in hot weather or premises. I got something like prickly heat from one.
All they do is make you feel too uncomfortable. I wore mine about three times and then put it away. If your body wants to go a certain way you can't stop it with this method. Exercise might be better to improve your muscle control.
The way to straighten your back Niamh,is to hold your head up and look the world straight in the eye.I know you can do that.
