Board Certified Doctor--Important or not?

Question:
My primary care physician has referred me to a specialist (ob/gyn) for some minor surgery. The ob/gyn is not board certified in ob/gyn. He went to med school in a foreign country in the 1980's but only got his license to practice in California 5 years ago.

He seems to be well respected and has written lots of articles on this kind of surgery.

How important is board certification? This doctor's info says Board Eligible which means all he has to do is take the test because he's completed all the other requirements. Why would a doctor not want to be board certified? Why not take the test?

Thanks so much.

Regards,
mari

Answers:
The only reason to not take the test and be certified is if you were afraid you would fail it. I think being board certified is VERY important. Find a different Doc.
If you have a super busy practice he may not have the time to take the exam. Yes he could make time but if his practice is thriving without it he many not want to stop and make time.
