Important jammed finger question.?
Question:
1.) I jammed my ring finger during basketball on July 26th. On july 26th and 27th i iced it well to keep the swelling down. It has been five days and i can only move the very tip of my ring finger. My ring finger swelled ALOT an is really big at the knuckle which makes my finger looks bent. It is blue and purple , a little yellow and red right at the crease of the knuckle. Did i do more than jam it and will time only heal it?
2.) A long with jamming my ring finger my middle finger got jammed too. I didn't jam my middle finger as bad but unforunatly i jammed my middle finger really bad a few years ago and my middle finger has only a little discoloration where you bend it and a little black and blue. it doesn't hurt too bad but i can't bend it toward my palm at all. i think i really screwed my middle finger up i probably have arthritis is it because the knuckle is really big. Is that possible?
Thanks in advance!!
Answers:
I play volleyball and basketball and have jammed my fingers several times. Time will definitely heal the "jammed" ring finger. Usually it takes a few weeks for the swelling to go down and the movement to come back. As for the middle finger, unforunately, I think the knuckle may stay like that after being jammed a few times. My middle finger knuckles have never gone back to their "pre - jamming" size.
I've had a lot of success with taping one finger to another. In your case I'd suggest taping the ring finger to the middle finger. Put some tape near the top and some more near the bottom (under the middle knuckle) and that will keep you from bending the injured fingers too much and keep the fingers protected. I've even found that with my fingers taped like that, I could still play ball even with jammed fingers.
