Lumbar spine injury-exercise advice for future?

Question:
I had a horse riding accident 4wks ago that resulted in a lumbar spine fracture (L2) it is a stable fracture which resulted in four weeks bed rest in a spinal unit and I will be wearing a bodybrace for nine weeks.
Has anyone any advice on what exercise I can resume once the fracture is healed. My doctor didn't make clear the advantages and disadvantages of exercise with this injury.
I don't want to make it worse in years to come by doing the wrong thing. I thought about swimming? Avoiding running and anything that will jolt my spine. Any advice appreciated.
Has anyone had a similar injury?

Answers:
I'm surprised your doctor did not discuss therapy options with you. You will definitely want to do exercises, and your doctor should refer you to a physical therapist. Many times, doctors have certain protocols on how they want their patients to be progressed with exercises following a spinal injury, so I don't want to suggest any exercises without knowing your full history. I would call your Dr. tomorrow, and ask when you can start physical therapy.
You first have to heal then begin PT. Your therapist will go over what excercises you should do.
