Hernia pain?

Hi Eric, I think Ozmick has pretty much given you the correct info.
You definately have a hernia. The best pain releif is medication. A Doctor will prescribe you with a recommended pain releif depending on exactly how much pain you have.
Recovery from hernia can take between around 1 week for the Key Hole Procedure and normally 4 weeks for Open Cut Surgery, however some people take up to 6 weeks to recover. After the recovery period it is still recommended that you avoid heavy lifting, just to ensure the wound is fully recovered and that the muscle and gauze is fully recovered.
A repair surgery, caused from damaging the area of surgery is said to hurt more than the original surgery and recovery is longer, so don't over do it.
These days hernia surgery is quite safe and hassle free. The Key Hole Procedure can be done at a Day Procedure Hospital, you will go home the same day. The Open Cut Surgery may require you to spend at least 1 night in Hospital but no more than 3 nights if all goes well.
For now, until you have surgery you should also avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities. If you find your self in severe pain or you are constipated or have strong abdominal pain, go straight to your closest ER. Hernias should not be ignored. If left untreated they tend to develop complications and become more difficult to repair.
Complications include bowel obstruction or strangulation. That is the contents such as fat or bowel becomes stuck and the blood supply is cut off. This may be life threatening. Emergency treatment is required.
Adults should avoid heavy lifting or straining for about 6 - 8 weeks after surgery. Such activity can disrupt the hernia repair.
Self-Care at Home
In general, all hernias should be repaired unless severe pre-existing medical conditions make surgery unsafe. The possible exception to this is a hernia with a large opening and a relatively small sac. Trusses and surgical belts or bindings may be helpful in holding back the protrusion of selected hernias when surgery is not possible or delayed. However, they should never be used in the case of femoral hernias.
Avoid activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure (lifting, coughing, or straining) that may cause the hernia to increase in size.
well my brother had to deal with his hernia for 3 yrs went to work and everything if u need to wait til sept then try not to pick up anything heavy and do to much heavy work
and u can wait
I am going through the same thing right now!
For the pain I have been given medication from my doctor called Tramal, it won't totally releive the pain but takes it away a bit.
recovery depends on the type of surgery. If you have Keyhole surgery the recovery time is quite quick, where the open cut procedure for larger hernias can take around 3 weeks.
I had one about 6 years ago...A hernia is basically your muscle sheath becoming unravelled (torn) which then permits what it was holding back (your internal organ stuff) to "bulge out..."
It won't repair itself...you must get "surgery" to repair it...and you should do it quickly before the tear widens...you don't want to know what happens then...
I had a "tear" three inches above my naval, which was causing a "bubble" due to the lower part of my stomach trying to poke thru the slit...
I entered the hospital at 6:00 a.m., was on the gurney being put under anesthesia by 8:00 a.m., woke up in the waiting room at about 12:00 noon (don't let them give you any more pain killers at that point, or they won't let you go home) with just a little grogginess, and a sligtly painful (but highly manageable without pain pills) abdominal itch, and...
I was home by 2:00 p.m. having a Martini and a smoke (not cigarettes) by 3:00 p.m. (not recommended by the doctors, but it didn't hurt me a bit...)...
For about a week after that, I walked like Fred Sanford from "Sanford & Son"...(you don't want to re-tear the repair, so walk gently like an old man)
And within a month, I was a tiger in bed again...
No worries...it's routine now days...get it done! You're going to have to eventually...now is the best time...Hope this helped (by the way...I hope your have healthcare (I did) because the procedure otherwise is about $10,000 dollars!)
