I have hypoglycemia - what kind of food should i eat before going to a concert?

Question:
i'm going to be standing up for at least 3 and a half hours, and i really don't want to collapse during it so, so what should i eat before it? and do i need to take any vitamins? if so, which ones?

Answers:
i too have hypoglycemia. the key is to eat small frequent meals to keep your body fueled. avoid alcoholic beverages, soft drinks & any "simple sugars", these cause your glucose levels to spike & drop quickly which is what causes you to collapse (I used to collapse quite often until I learned what foods to avoid & what's good). Another thing I do is carry a pack of peanut butter crackers with me for emergencies. Before you go to the show, eat a high protein meal, be sure to get something to eat while @ the concert as well. It doesn't have to be a full meal, but something to give your body a little fuel. Also, when I start to feel like I'm about to crash, I'll drink a small glass of OJ, that's a quick fix, but I follow that with a small meal as quickly as possible. I haven't found vitamins to help any in this situation. the key is what you eat & when you eat it. If you're going to eat something that's high in carbs, make sure you put some protein along with it, the protein will help balance your body out a little, the carbs will act as sugar does - so if I'm going to eat mashed potatoes for example, I'll have a grilled chicken breast with it. I hope this helps. I met with a dietician quite a few times to work out a menu of foods that are safe to eat. Another piece of advice she told me is that if I'm going to be someplace where I can't eat a small meal, carry a slim jim with me. it's a quick snack, easy to carry & although not the healthiest, it'll carry you until the next meal.
Eat some bananas. The potassium is good for you, it will prevent cramping in your legs.
Nutritious food. No crap. Just any home cooked meal. Maybe even make yourself a sandwhich with veggies on it.
You need to eat complex carbohydrates that will convert into glucose over a long period of time. Bananas are great, as are apples and oranges. Make a delightful fruit salad and then bring some with you in a small container to munch on during the concert. Remember, eat small quantities over a long period of time, keeping something in your system all the time. If you think fruit is inconvenient, then try granola bars or juice, or a combination of both.
eat something with fat, protein, and complex carbs. that should keep your blood sugar high for a maximum period of time.
also, the more you eat right before, the longer your blood sugar will remain high.
