Previous Broken Ankle. Recovery Advice?

Question:
I broke my ankle about 7 weeks ago, i had a backslab on for 2 weeks and a hard cast on for 4. I had my cast taken off about a week ago and the doctor at the hospital said that he was happy for me to bear full weight on it and to cycle and swim. He did not take an x ray.

I am bearing around 3/4 of my weight on my foot, but If I try to increase it, it kind of jarrs my foot and a big pain rushes up it. It is still very stiff and i cant move it around like the other one. Also still quite swollen.

My doctor says to just work with the pain, but is it ment to hurt this much? Also im a bit concerned they didnt take an x ray.

Any advice?
Thanks.

Answers:
* Try doing exercises with your foot, like pointing it up and down and rotating it from side to side and round and round.
* Try taking an anti-inflammatory pain killer to help reduce swelling.
* Soak your foot in hot water (not too hot)
* I woud also go back to see your doc and tell him your concerns.
You need physical therapy. A broken bone is usually accompanied by muscle and tendon damage.
Well speaking from personal experience I would go back to the doctor and double check about the pain. Although they don't like to take too many X-rays you might ask him why he didn't. The same thing happened to me and about 20 years after the break my ankle started to hurt badly (arthritis) and when the medicine didn't work they X-rayed my ankle and found that the break hadn't set properly so I had to get cortisone injections.

not2posh had good advice, but I've got something to add. Even if the doctor says you can put your full weight on it, don't do it unless you think you're ready to. People tend to blindly beleive everything doctors tell them, as if they're omnicient, or something. They are not accident proof. They are human. My friend was given the same advice, and she's been rebreaking her ankle for over a year. Every time they tell her it's okay to put her weight on it, it breaks again, just while she's walking. If it still hurts when you walk on it, then get crutches or a cane and keep your weight off it until YOU think it's healed. It's your body, and in some cases, you know better than a doctor ever could.
