A friend of mine was in a car accident. Why did one of her doctors check her rectum?

Question:
A friend of mine was in a car accident. She had two broken ribs and a collapsed lung. The doctors did a series of tests. At the end one of them said, "You're doing great. We just have one more test." He inserted his finger in her rectum. I don't think that it was anything but standard procedure, but why? What was he checking for?

Answers:
If the finger comes out with blood that would show that one of the broken ribs pierced the intestine.
internal bleeding
Probably looking for internal bleeding or for damage to the intestines or rectum

Personally, I think I would have asked the doctor why he is sticking his finger in my @ss!
He was looking for a hub cap
He was looking for intestinal bleeding.
I think anyone that wonts to stick his finger up her *** is getting of on it (what a sick puppy he is)
He was checking for any hidden internal bleeding.
checking for internal bleeding because it is hard to see in any test.
The digital rectal exam is part of any trauma exam. It serves several purposes. The first is, as many have said, to check for blood. Blood in the rectum can mean serious problems and a need for more tests.

The second is to check for what is known as rectal tone. If there is poor rectal tone it can be a sign of spinal cord injury.

Also during the rectal exam the doctor feels for bone deformities along the spine, again meaning more serious injury and the need for further tests.

Hopefully your friend is OK
