I just found out that I have scoliosis, and I just got my back brace! I'm scared. Help!?

Question:
June 20th, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. I have been to the orthopedic. I just got my brace 2 days ago. I am in so much pain. My back muscles (lower back) are hurting so badly because the Boston brace is pushing into them. I'm scared that I will need surgery and a metal rod inserted up my spine when this thing gets off of me in 2 years. Every hour or so, I just brake down in tears because it hurts so bad. I'm scared. Help me.

Answers:
Dear Emily, Did the doctors tell you to expect pain? If not, I would inform them of how hurt you are feeling and they will adjust it for you. Don't worry yet about what will happen in two years. Just try to follow all the instructions of the doc's. We are all thinking of you. Soon people with histories of back braces will be on this site to tell you their experiences. Hold tight. xxxxxxxxx
It will just take some time to get used to the brace and then you will forget you even have it on you . I got braces on 6 weeks agao and i hated them and now i forget i have them on .

I don't know much about your condition, but common sense tells me that you should be receiving some instruction and support from your health care provider about this. If you are experiencing a great deal of pain call your doctor. He may suggest that you ease into wearing the brace for so many hours per day and/or prescribe a pain reliever until you get used to wearing it.
Also ask for a referral to agencies that have support groups and or informational sessions about what to expect. Google your condition or consult WebMD or other sites that might have information. Write down any questions that come to mind about your particular situation and consult your doctor. Keep a journal so you won't forget.
It is difficult having a debilitating disease or condition, but you mustn't allow it to take over all your life and leave you feeling helpless and depressed. The more you learn about what you have, alternative treatments that are available and ASK about using them in YOUR unique situation, the better off you will be. Don't just sit there in pain, take action!
Don't panic and believe everything you read or hear. Ask questions, get answers and be informed. After that, consult God. You need faith to overcome. I hope you are a believer. God is a very present help in times of trouble.
I can say that because I know that my redeemer lives! I was born with a painful and potentially debilitating congential condition that PREDICTED I would not live past the age of 21. I'm 50. I enjoy a relatively pain free and episode free life. I have lived well and I know that is because of my faith and getting all the information I could, asking questions and learning to take care of myself.
God bless you.
