Elavil - Anyone take it for severe headaches?

I took Elavil for severe migraines for a few years. It worked okay for awhile, but I eventually got immune to it. It didn't work nearly as well as Topamax, however, but it also didn't have the side effects. The main side effect Elavil had on me was weight gain. There's another drug similiar to Topamax called Zonegran. I'm on it now, and the only effect it's having on me so far is a huge decrease in appetite.
I don't really think that you will have the same results that you got from the Topomax, but the side effects shouldn't be as severe. Elavil, will mainly work though the nerve that are causing you headaches so it may take a week or two before you see full effect.
I have worked with several athletes who suffered from post-concussion syndrome - severe headaches, insomnia, lack of concentration - and they were prescribed elavil - or the generic amitriptyline, and saw good results.
It is traditionally used as an anti-depressant, but it has seemed to work well for the patients I have worked with, reducing their headaches and concussion symptoms.
I've had chronic stress and migraine headaches for over 30 years. I've been taking Elavil for over 10 years. I don't know if it ever helped the headaches very much. It may constipate you. It may also make you sleepy. The main reasons I still take it are that it helps me sleep, and if I stop taking it I get dizzy spells.
