Help I think I have a weird stomach virus!?

Question:
After work my boyfriend & I went to the gym. Neither of us ate anything unusual, or even the same thing. While working out, I got nauseous & threw up. I thought it was because I'm not really used to working out. When I got home, the vomiting was non stop. I was violently throwing up large amounts of fluids, & could barely make it to the toilet in time for hours. I couldn't help drinking because I was so thirsty. My boyfriend told me to eat something to help my stomach absorb whatever is making me sick. I did so and continued to throw up. The odd part is that I only threw up liquid, not the food I had eaten 5 minutes ago. Several doses of pepto bismol, tums, & glasses of ginger ale later, I finally started to feel better & the vomiting subsided. Then my boyfriend started with the same thing. Vomiting only the liquids he consumed, without the solid food. It's odd, we've been up with it all night with this & can't find info about it.. so I figured I'd see if anyone here could help. Thanks

I am very glad you asked this because it is serious and i can add some information here. Vomiting is usually caused by irritation of the stomach. Lots of things can cause this irritation. The most common causes are:

-Viral illness. Just like a virus can infect the nose and throat, it can infect and irritate the stomach. Also, swallowing lots of nasty nasal mucus from a cold can upset the stomach too. If a day or two of vomiting is followed by several days of diarrhea, the most likely cause is a viral illness.
-Eating or drinking something unusual. This doesn't necessarily imply food poisoning. The body sometimes rejects a food that is new or different. Also, eating too much of any one thing, even if it was tolerated before, can result in stomach upset.

Now from what you said it sounds like both of you have/had a virus, this can be received from something besides eating. Since you were at the gym you could have caught someones cough or touched something they had been on. It would seem like this because both of you are sick, one of you most likely had it and kissed the other and transfered it. The reason your boyfriend started vomiting later is most likely because he is a tab bit healthier and his immune system is in better shape. As far as you just vomiting only the liquids that is probably because you had just worked out and the food had been converted into thing your body needs or had mixed with the liquids because you had drank so much because of the working out. Now i would suggest going to the doctor but if you feel you can tackle it yourselves there are some thing you need to do.
-Both of you need to be careful and once you use a cup or spoon or something to put it away to be cleaned, this includes toothbrushes and such, make sure no one else can get this
-When drinking liquids take it in small amounts as not to put all your eggs in one basket. If you accept it keep on drinking, also try some cold or warm liquids some times the stomach reacts differently to the temperatures.
-Don't bother with solid foods for now, stick to apple sauce and ice cream.

I would suggest bed rest until you feel better which will only take a few days but if you need to get up and go to work/school make sure you keep warm and try not to eat too much before going out. If you are experiencing pain after vomiting or just general stomach pain take some acetaminophen (Tylenol) in pill form with some warm water NOT MILK OR ICE CREAM. Good Luck, and feel free to email me for some further advice.
