A Question for 'former' smokers who've already quit smoking, did you use any aids to help you in your quit?

Question:
hmmm ... I had quit for 2 yrs. before, because I wanted to be healthy for a major surgery I went thru awhile ago.
I stuck to my quit for 2 yrs. then something strange happened [that I won't post here] --and ended up smoking for a yr. and 3 months.
Okay, now I've gotten back on track again, and it's been a few days
I QUIT SMOKING. Its the 1st I've not smoked in a few days since over a yr. ago.
I'm chewin nicorette gum, which REALLY helps so much more than nothing
and I like incense
anyway, what all did you do to help you in your quit?
the only thing I worry about is ocassional moodiness that may (or may not) go along w/the quit in the beginning that I 'might' have to deal with.
hmmm ... what would you suggest?
extra exercise?

This question is welcome to responses of those who were FORMER smokers/I'd love support from people who understand addiction from experience please.
well I like any support, but it's hard to understand unless you've gone thru it, you see?

Answers:
i quit new year's day 1974, for about the 6th time, but THAT time I decided I'd smoke if I ever felt like it for single, special occasions, then desist again. This developed into once a month, if I felt like it, as much as I wanted, on the third Tuesday ("boys' night", when a group of old friends meet at a local restaurant). In actual practice I usually don't smoke for some years at a time--it's been three or four years since the last puff--but in theory I can smoke one night a month, every month, and thus don't ever quit "for the rest of my life" (which is a MIGHTY long time, and the reason I feel it's so easy 1) to fail, and 2) to beat yourself up and give up entirely when you DO fail), but only restrain myself for 30 days or less. This is a very easy hurdle. Occasionally I've smoked, once a month, and sometimes several months in a row, but always on that third Tuesday night only, and this has worked for me for the past 33 years!
I've never smoked. However, I work in a pharmacy and know for a fact that there is a new drug out there that is supposed to be very good for smoking cessation. It's called Chantix. We've been selling a lot of this for several months now.

If you have prescription insurance, see if your insurance company will pay something towards it. The retail price is quite expensive.
I quit March 24 of this year. I used the patch. Believe it or not, drinking water helped me the most for cravings. It was amazing. Deep breathing also helped.

I was VERY moody. Actually I was surly, mean and nasty. Other than trying to keep my mouth shut, I did not have anything to help me with this unfortunate aspect.

Good luck to you!
