Try having a snack..I know, you're not supposed to eat just before bed, but that usually makes me sleepy.
Ugh. Same here. I'm in CA so its only 12 right now, but yesterday I slept at 1 AM and had to go to work at 8 AM. I was dozing off every few minutes. Had to close my door so people wouldn't see me sleeping at my desk LOL.
I have a script for Ambien, I take half a pill if I'm tired but can't go to sleep, a full pill if I need to wake up but am wide awake when I should be already asleep. No i'm not old.
Sometimes I wish I had a tranquilizer gun I could just shoot myself with when things get like that.
Try reading a psalm from the bible. I promise it will work.
When I have trouble sleeping, I do one of two things.
1. I sometimes try making up stories and movies in my mind, creating scenes that I'd like to write in my book. As a child I even did this, but by replaying the movies I saw in the past in my mind and changing them to suit me. This also helps me get my mind calmed down enough for my body to get some rest. Works most of the time as I drift off while imagining these stories.
2. I exercise...tire my body out as much as I can. Yes, it'll wake you up a bit, but that won't last too long and usually makes it easier for you to slip off to sleep feeling more relaxed.
My guess is that you're mind is super active even though your body probably wants to rest. I can never sleep when I can't get my mind to shut off and I have to do something to make me focus less on my problems or responsibilities and more on just getting to sleep. If you are staying awake because you have things on your mind, getting something else on your mind that is less stressful will help.
When all else fails, though, I have a glass of wine. But only try this if you're legal drinking age. I figure you are, but you can never tell for sure on these things sometimes.
Good luck.
I know this probably aint right, but sometimes you gota do what you gotta do. Try some Nyquil once in a while. I'm a student athlete so I have a demanding schedule during the day (expresso coffees and caffeine pills) so that I'll crash at the right time around like 10-11PM that night. But in the rare cases I don't crash, I take a little Nyquil and I'm good. Some people might rave about the risk of dependency of pills and drugs but, once in a while you should be alright -- just don't abuse it. You'll be knocked out for atleast 8 hours.
