Why do cramps sometimes happen for no reason and hurt alot especially in the foot?

Cramping is generally linked to an imbalance in any of the electrolytes: magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium or phosporous. But tends especially to be linked to a shortage either in magnesium, calcium or potassium. Eat bananas which are rich in potassium and also apples or apple juice. Take a dolomite tablet or other magnesium/calcium combination tablet after your evening meal and before bedtime. These should help. There is scientific research that shows that magnesium can help in particular with nightime leg/foot cramps. Magnesium is best taken in combination with calcium (2:1) because they are needed in proportion and also because there is some evidence also that calcium can help with cramps. If you sweat excessively after vigoruous exercise you need to replace all electrolytes. You can buy a proprietary drink for that or eat watermelon (rich in potassium and magnesium) with some cheese (sodium, cacium and phosphorous replacement). Of course if you are under medical supervision and/or are on medication then talk to a health care provider before taking any supplements.
Cramps are painful because of prolonged muscular contraction.
