Choosing a surgeon may be the single most important thing that you do in planning for a successful hip replacement. You can begin by asking your primary care doctor for names of possibilities. Hip replacement specialists are trained as orthopedic surgeons. Ideally you want one who has specialized further by concentrating on joint replacements. Some even specialize further to hand, knee, hip, shoulder, etc. surgery. You may need to consult with more than one surgeon before you choose the one you want to do your surgery. When you interview surgeons, be sure to ask them how many hip replacements they do in a year and how many surgeries they do on people like you with your condition. In the yellow pages under physicians and surgeons, look for orthopedic surgeons, and call. Most of them do hip replacement surgery and if not, they can tell you who does.
Look it up in the phone book under orthopedic surgeons. Then make some phone calls. Or just ask some older people. Sometimes they gossip a lot and they probably have the dirt on a good dr.
