Is 10 mg of Prozac OK to take with 150 mg of Ultram?

Question:
My Shrink prescribed me Prozac after 11 anti-ds in 10 years haven't done the trick for my severe depression and agoraphobia. I'm also on Xanax (been on that for 10 years as well), 2 mg per day, for panic disorder.
I also take about 150 mg of Ultram (tramadol) everyday for chronic pain until I can get to a pain clinic as I just got insurance in June.
I know some say it's dangerous to mix Ultram with any antideppresants, but I'd like to know other opinions. I've heard from Pharmacists that it can cause Serotonin Syndrome but my doctor said that wasn't very likely.
Any advice or opinions?
Also, I've heard Prozac makes you feel really good. I used to be hooked on Oxycontin and I still struggle with wanting that good feeling again, but I'm trying to stay clean. Think Prozac will help with this as well?
Thanks!

Answers:
Ultram (Ultracet, Tramadol) alone can be extrememly dangerous. I was on it for a long time. It's a non-narcotic pain killer, but produces narcotic like properties. I wouldn't suggest mixing with the ultram. I have a friend who took Valium and Tramadol and had a seizure. I don't know if I would trust your doctor, espically one that says 'it's not very likely.' But, the doctor does have a medical degree, so I suppose there is some sense there. I replaced Hydrocodone with Tramadol when my Hydrocodone supply ended. In my opinion, Tramadol is easier to get addicted to. I actually get withdrawals from Tramadol for only being on them a short period. I know how you feel, trust me...I spend everyday trying to stop, but never succeeding. Congrats to you, I know addiction is a constant battle.
A good site for you to check out: www.erowid.org
You can read about ultram and experiences as well as about every other drug. Very awesome site. Just click 'search' on the main page, type in Ultram, and woo-freakin'-hoo. You can read about people who have had seizures and what not.
Good luck on your journey, anyone who can quit opiates and opiods has my full respect.
Prozac like most SSRI's will create a withdrawl syndrome when you go off of it.that is if you stop suddenly. If you wean yourself off slowly you feel the effects less. As for mixing the tramadol with the prozac, my opinion is that as long as it is not for long term use then there should not be a problem. But, you risk potential kidney and or liver damage if the consumption becomes too excessive. Additionally, you are on low dosages of both prozac and tramadol, so as long as you dont increase dosages then there should not be a problem.
Dear friend, I think as long as you are not taking more Ultram than 150 mg a day, and since they come in 50 mg, I wonder if it is possible to consider just taking it at night.

I think you have had a very hard time and I am proud of you. I was told that as long as a physician is monitoring you, it is okay to take Ultram with an antidepressant. However, just make sure that you are getting these medications from the same doctor. (I know you probably are). I think Prozac is quite good. Yes, it will probably make you feel good again...a lot better than some of the other ones that are newer.

Also, Ultram will help you get over the Oxycontin so be glad that it has not been labeled a controlled substance yet in your state. Each state has its own rules about controlled substances.

Checking with your doctor is really the best advice I can give you, though, because he/she is the one you need to share your feelings with.
