What do you do if you're alone and choking?
Question:
Answers:
If your coughing or able to move air at all, keep trying to get it up that way. Dropping yourself on the back of a chair will work in theory (I don't know of it actually working) and we use to even teach that. The problem dropping yourself over a chair is that it could injure your internal organs, so be sure you need to do that. If I was choking and alone, the first thing I'd do is dial 911, run outside where the public has a better chance of seeing me, and then work at getting it out. Even if I can move a little air I'd do that. When the 911 operator answers and doesn't get a response, they will at least send someone to find out why. If you pass out outside the responders will find you quickly. Seconds can mean the difference; work at freeing it outside. As a Paramedic, when I get to a house on a 911 check, if the door is locked, I may be delayed in helping someone locked in. Also if you free before we get there, all the better!
try to do the Heimlich yourself?
i guess
does that work?
is that possible?
:]
Push your stomach against the couch or a counter
top something too plunge the food out of your esophagus. I have often wondered this myself.
Good luck CJ
You can bend over a chair right below your rib cage and just "hit" yourself against the chair which in turn will dislodge the peice of food.
Get behind a dining room chair and place the back of it just below your rib cage and push yourself down against it. This is supposed to be equivalent to the Heimlich maneuver.
