well first if you like to listen to music like i do then put a slow cd in and then just lay on your pillow and close your eyes or you can work out like nuts to make yourself tired and then you will fall asleep. try to stay away from soda s exc before bed

if you have this problem frequently i recommend you read the book NO MORE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS by dr hauri. it gives very practicle ( but probably not thought of) advice. it helped me and was recommended to me by the dr who did my sleep study. good luck
relax all your muscles
read right before
make sure your eyes are not exposed to light while they are closed
drinking some warm milk can help
don't think about stuff that worry/scare you
count sheeps!

maybe read a book or play some music... you can also take melatonin ( sleeping pill) i use those when i cant sleep

You need to do relaxing activities an hour before you go to bed. No eating or drinking a few hours before bed. Your body keeps you up to digest foods and trips to the bathroom should not be an excuse to not be sleeping! Read a book, journal, or anything else that relaxes you. Do not exercise before bed, as it raises your heartbeat. Try taking a hot bath, which will relax all your muscles. Maybe you need some white noise in the background, like a fan.
If all else fails, you can get a over the counter sleep remedy called Melatonin. It is safe and effective. It is a supplement sold by the vitamins. Good Luck! Think positive things before you go to bed. Don't think about sleep or don't think about things that are bothering you.
