Myofascial trigger points (muscle spasm, knot)?

Question:
I have had one on my lower back for over a year, my doc is sending me to physical therapy, has anybody had them? What did you do?? Mine hurt constantly.

Answers:
I'm a PT, and work on trigger points every day. They respond to deep pressure, which is held until a release is felt. Your physical therapist will most likely do this for you, along with ultrasound and massage. Hopefully they will also check out your posture, muscle strength of your abdominals, legs, and back, and give you appropriate stretches and exercises. These will help to prevent these muscle spasms from returning. Good luck!
I've had them before, and my doctor injected them with marcaine and a steroid. It worked brilliantly.

I've also had someone lean on them with their elbow - and that hurts so good, and helps break the spasm.

I changed jobs, to one with less stress, and haven't got them since.

Good luck
A trigger point is usually a symptom of an underlying problem. Most commonly, a disc related problem. However, stress, posture and other medical conditions (such as fibromayalgia) can also cause myofascial pain.

The physical therapist will do an assessment to determine if an underlying cause can be found. Addressing this cause will usually cause the trigger point to go away. For more chronic "myofascial pain syndromes" however, regular massage therapy is often indicated for which I would actually recommend seeing a massage therapist for maintenence visits. Some people also go for regular trigger point injections with lidocane from a pain specialist.

I hope your PT and doctor can help determine the actual cause of your trigger points so is can be addressed on a more permanent basis.
