Thanks
Answers:
I am nearly 51 and have spent 3/4 of my life without medical coverage.
Being an LPN does not automatically insure medical coverage, but it does help as I can talk to doctors and get samples if I need to.
The medical coverage offered to medical personnel is not cheap and rarely covers what I need. I cannot afford to get coverage on my own as the premiums are nearly 1/4 of my net pay a month.
I have not researched national coverage, so I cannot compare it with private.
But if waiting for an appointment is one of the problems, then private insurance is just as bad; getting medicines paid by insurance is nearly impossible due to the constant changes in policies and what is actually approved. Doctors need to do many tests, but insurance will not cover if they find the tests are "medically unnecessary".
Case in point, one client needed a needle biopsy of breast tissue to rule out cancer.
It is the least invasive procedure with good results. Her insurance refused to pay for the test, but was willing to pay for a more expensive test involving surgery room expenses, specialists, and other non essential things. Then refused to pay for the procedure due to "not necessary medical expense" due to the needle biopsy would have produced the same results.
The client lost her coverage as she fought the findings. The doctor did not get paid; the hospital did not get paid. The client had breast cancer and now cannot get insurance.
I had no health prescription coverage for awhile - it was not pretty !
at times
10 years no ins. can't afford it.
I went without health insurance for five years... it was a nightmare. I broke my thumb in two places and decided not to seek treatment because I was afraid of accumulating a medical debt that would take me years to pay off.
