You ALWAYS start with the ABC's: Airway (do they have one), breathing (are they), and Circulation (do they have a pulse).
If there is bleeding, start with the ABC's then apply pressure to the injured site except if it is a fracture.
in the marine corps we alway learned it this way

stop the bleeding
Start the breath
protect the wound
and treat for shock

in civilian life you also have to determine if it is safe for you to administer first aid, not realistic in the marines
First aid for what? I have to know what you're dealling wioth.
