Is it safe give my children age 3 and 18 months rainwater to drink ?

Question:
We live in the counryside and we collect rain water from our roof which is covered with earth and grass. We think that it may give our kids a better immunity and the recent lack of water in our area, due to floods, made us think about how dependent we all are on artificially cleansed water. We like our kids getting dirty etc. We live in basic conditions with no electricity so this would just be a small adjustment to our current life style.

Answers:
I am afraid this is potentially dangerous, it could collect toxins, bacteria and parasites. This may be natural, but I am afraid it is pretty stupid. All over the world parents would kill to give their children clean safe water, as comes out of our taps or we can buy cheaply in bottles. You are pretty selfish to consider spurning this gift we in the West take for granted.
Social services wont be happy
Maybe if you get some kind of water filter? I am not sure to be honest but I don't think it would do any harm because what child hasn't caught the raindrops in their mouth?
Rain comes from clouds... clouds come from small particals of dirt and dust that is put into the air... if you want your child drinking dirt and dust then the answer is yes...
I wouldn't think so, think of all the polution in it. You'd need to clean it, I'm sure there must be websites on this. look at http://www.freerain.co.uk

No! Unless you boil it and add water cleaning tablets!
I would say you would need to set up some sort of filtration system. I bet someone out there makes something for rain water. I think it's great that you're thinking of ways to conserve water.

The answer above me is a great idea too, I didn't think about boiling...that would be easy to do.
rain water is the purest water when it evaporates from waterever water sourse it has come from either the ocean or lake etc, but when it mixes with the sulpher and other elements in the atmosphere it becomes acid rain , which is not good to drink .. you can build up your childs immunity by not bathing them evey night and just generaly letting them play with out using bleach on everythgin they touch etc.. but please boil the water first .. plus , anything could have been on your roof all kinds of faeces and urine and not to mention microscopic organisms

please listen and i hope this helped

if you live in basic conditions with no electricity, how are you using the interent???

thers no way i would drink rainwater, and i don't think it would help your kids immune system, probably make them ill with all the pollutants thats in the air.
don't get it from the roof but if it hasn't touched anything like if u put it in the middle of the yard where the rain doesn't touch anything then its fine, its the cleanest water you can get unless it is acid rain but if u live in the country then you probaby don't have it.
lucky this is a joke question as i was going to say...dont be so stupid...no you flipping well cant!!
No electricity? How's your computer working then, you bloody muppet?
Sounds like a good idea, but as a paediatric nurse I would have to say that I wouldn't advise it. The earth and grass is probably ok, but rain can pick up pollution from the atmosphere on its way down.
Your choice though x
i dont think its a good idea...its one thing building up immuntity but i think this would be a step too far...think of all the disease epidemics caused by drinking dirty water before clean running water was available in houses...cholera for example?...millions still die in countries such as africa because of contaminated drinking water...
uh, you live with no electricity and yet you have a computer with internet, hmmmm. anyway, no, do not give it to them, either boil it will or filter it.
How does your computer work ? back in the days when there was no tap water people collected water in barrels only for washing clothes and such uses and for drinking water it would be carried long distances and boiled , to answer your question 'no 'under no circumstances would or should you give your little childrem water from the roof are you parents for real , give your children some comfort and a few luxuries and live in the present and not some dark age that has long gone and for some people in those poor countries where water is precious what would they give to turn on a tap and have clean water to hand .
If you want to be independant get water condenser, this will help you clean the water, boil it and then cool it to rid it of germs.

If you really want to protect you kids though you would be better of getting ready cleansed water..

You could also safe money on electricity by not wastin it on asking daft questions via you battery powered computor.

LOL
If your roof is covered with earth and grass all sorts of bacteria which could be harmful to young children could be breeding in it. Also animals which are known to carry disease like pigeons or other birds could of come in contact with the rain water on the roof.

I think you should find some eco-friendly way of sterilising the water; did I hear that in hot African countries, mothers are told to put well water into a plastic bottle and leave in direct sunlight for several hours to kill bacteria, and make it drinkable for children?
As rain falls from the sky it picks up all sorts of pollutants from the atmosphere so please use your sense. I would only use it if it has been filtered and boiled first.
as long as you don't live in the countryside in Chernobyl ,please dont do it anyway boil it first
I would boil it first
