Can't Decide...Nursing School or Sonography School?
Question:
Answers:
Don't let the negative things you've heard affect your decision. There are great nurses out there and great hospitals that treat their nurses well. Plus there is a high demand for nurses. I can't tell you which career to pick, they both sound ful-filling. Maybe you could make a list with pros and cons of each and really think about which one is more in your heart. Good luck.
Only you can decide, but nursing school will offer more diverse opportunities in the future.
What kind of negative things about nursing? I've heard nothing but OPPORTUNITY! There is a great need for nurses nationwide. You can pick your destiny. You could leave one job and have 10 other places knocking down your door.
Of course it's not easy work. It takes a special type of person to be a nurse. If you aren't determined, passionate, dedicated and hard working...oh, and most importantly intelligent, maybe nursing is not for you.
I know I ALWAY see ads for sonography technicians in the paper. Like never. Good luck with that.
I was just accepted to nursing school this spring, and I will start in two weeks.so, I can't tell you exactly how it is...because I've not been there yet. I can tell you the reason I chose that path however, and that is versatility. I had also considered respiratory therapy. However, when you go into specific fields such as the sonography, the locations you can work drop dramatically...not to mention you'll be doing pretty much the same thing, day in and day out. With Nursing I'll be able to work in hospitals, Dr. 's offices, nursing homes, homecare, health clinics/departments, teach nursing, heck even the possibility of a school nurse. I also like the variety of of nursing specialties that will be available...ICU, ER, OB, Peds, Psych...all sorts of possibilities.
I know it sounds like I'm deciding this for you and trying to push you in one direction, but I just know a lot more about the nursing and wanted to give you some food for thought.
Good Luck, and be prepared to study hard, as I'm sure neither will be a "cake walk".
I'm a sonographer, and I quite enjoy it. I am registered in general abdominal sonography (RDMS) and vascular sonography (RVT).
The problem with sonography as a career, though, is that you are limited in career options.
With nursing, there's an established career ladder, with various branches that you can explore. Starting as an RN, you can, with additional schooling, get your BSN, become a nurse anesthetist, or a nurse practitioner, or a host of other options.
In sonography, though, you practically hit a wall once you've gotten your registries. There is talk of trying to create an advanced class of sonographers, to be called "Ultrasound Practitioners." However, this faces stiff opposition from radiologists, and the legal liability questions scare most hospitals and clinics, so I'm not optimistic about this happening.
