I recently had back surgery and my nerves are irritated from the surgery?

Question:
My left foot burns pretty much all day. The doctor prescribed me some Nuerontin but said it could take up to a week or two to work. Is there anything else that would help? I was prescribed a Vicodin type medicine too but that didn't help. I really don't want to wait a week or two for this sever pain to go away. Can someone lend me some advice?

Answers:
carol is on crack. a low dose oral steroid could help but your doctor may not want to prescribe that for you as there are side effects. it sounds like the nerves are irritated and swollen. neurontin is a good drug and it is what i use (i do spine surgery for a living). to be honest time and a little rest are the best things for this, followed by some PT down the road. if it doesn't get better in about 3-4 weeks ask to get another MRI. sometimes things can work themselves loose after the surgery and you can have a completely diifferent problem.
Talk to a Neurologist. I know you recently had back surgery, but allow your back surgeon and a neurologist to have "a meeting of the minds" concerning the problem. They deal specifically with these type of problems. One of the best in the Dallas, Texas area is Dr. Andrew Konen 214.252.9432. He put in a permanent spinal cord stimulator for me 1-2-07. Good luck to you!
iF THE DR DIDNT TELL YOU what it is- I will

You developed RSD or CRPS . In the long run I almost can guarantee what you will end up with is Spinal column stimulator I am dead serious. This is about hte only thing that helps the pain.
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophyis a chronic pain disorder associated with sensitivity to light touch, swelling, skin color and temperature changes, weakness, abnormal sweating, muscle atrophy, and subsequent depression.

Some say Oxygen Therapy in a Hyperbaric Chamber helps.

YOU MAY END UP WITH A SPINAL COLUMN STIMULATOR
