I think I may be sleeping TOO MUCH...?
Question:
My friend (also a teenager) says that when she gets more than 7 - 8 hours of sleep a night it makes her more tired...
Is it possible that I'm getting too much sleep. And don't get me wrong it's really good quality sleep. I have no trouble sleeping and when I wake up I feel really good... but then I'm sleepy again later. I have low blood pressure, would this have anything to do with it?
O, and the reason that it bothers me that I sleep so much is because my days seem really short, this started about mid-way thru last school year and my life was get up, school, come home, nap, Homework/dinner, bed no spear time for anything!
thanks : )

There are a couple of possible issues here. It's not clear if you're a young man or woman so you may still be growing and need the rest. Also, since you seem to get sleepy after lunch, you should look at what you're eating-a higher protein (tuna, chicken, turkey, egg) and higher complex carb (green leafy veggies etc) may help stave off sleepiness rather than a simple carb based lunch like a sandwich on white bread and juice or soft drinks which are loaded with sugar so you're up and then you crash.
Try keeping a diary for a month. Include what time you're going to bed, what you eat, how much exercise you get (that helps get the blood moving and increases energy levels!) and how you feel each day. If you don't see a pattern and feel better in about a month, you should consider seeing a doctor.
Hope that helps!
Thats the life...
you might be I used to do that all the time but I stoped and I sleep alot better at night and I'm not so tired
It's possible you're sleepin too much but with low bp too you really should see your dr and discuss it with him.
Sleep is actually good for the human body, and I've never heard of sleeping too much. It's usually people that don't get enough sleep that have all the problems. But stress/depression causes people to sleep more, so do you have something on your mind? If not, then I'm sure it's perfectly normal. You're 16, you're still growing, and your body needs rest. There's no danger in it, but you won't have much time to do all the things you want.
I was in the same situation you're in. Only recently have I realized just how bad this is for our health. I learned it's not that you're always tired, but your body has become accustomed to knowing that by 1pm, it's time for sleep again. And it automatically begins gearing up for shut down time. That's the tiredness you're feeling. BUT THIS IS AN UNHEALTHY HABIT. You need to wane yourself off of it.
Try staying awake instead of heading to your bed around 1 when fatigue starts setting in. Go outside for a walk and bring a bag of healthy munchies so you can eat while you're walking. This way your body's systems get preoccupied with circulation and digestion. When you come back inside, don't watch TV or sit around. Do something active in the house... talk with someone, play with your little siblings, help cook dinner... anything like that. After that don't stay up late. Go to bed early and wake up at an appropriate time. 9:30 pm - 8 am is fine. Hope this advice helps!
