Laparoscopic antireflux surgery?

Question:
I am due to have the above operation in November and wondered if anyone out there has had the same op and what their thoughts were. I am currently taking Lansoprazole 15m and that seems to have the reflux under control however the surgeon seems to think I should have it done. Any comments please?

Answers:
I had the surgery in January '06. It wasn't all that bad. The incisions are tiny, and scarring is minimal. You'll eat small amounts of soft foods for at least the first week, and you'll need to eat lightly for another week or two. I teach and I was back to work in 2 weeks. Even if your reflux is under control, you may still experience damage from the acid without realizing it. My dentist said that over time the constant acid problems can erode your tooth enamel.
You should have the procedure if you have been offered it by your GP. The acid from reflux can cause real problems over the years, from removing the enamel from you teeth to increasing the chances of cancer of the throat and oesophagus due to the acid. Good luck - you will be fine!
