What can I do for my cat, I think he has an abscess?

Question:
I noticed today that my tomcat has a rather large hole in the crease of his mouth. As more thoroughly inspecting his mouth, I noticed about an inch down from that, he has a big knot on his neck. He cries when I touch this knot on his neck, but I was trying to see if it was a puss pocket/an abscess, but he wouldn't let me apply pressure? So, I don't know. He's been laying around all day, not really interested in anything... Does anyone think it could be an abscess, even though it is that far away from the actual puncture wound? I was thinking it may be one of those worms that tunnel under the skin? Because up until now, I wasn't aware that cats are more prone to abscess's due to fighting, etc etc. I am going to call the vet tomorrow, but any input or help would be highly appreciated!

Answers:
Don't give him any pain killer designed for humans. Cats are extremely sensitive to it and he may die.
Cat's skin heals extremely fast so they are very prone to abscesses because the skin will heal faster then the tissue underneath. Take him to a vet. What he will do is open the skin over the abscess so it can drain. You will then have to keep it open so it can heal from the inside out. He may have you wash it out with sterile water or something like that a few times a day also. He will also probably give him antibiotics so the infection doesn't get worse.
He may also have pain killers that are appropriate for cats but never give an animal, especially cats, anything out of your medicine cabinet.
If he has a worm under the skin the vet will need to see it your cat so he can remove it. He may have to treat the cat depending on what kind of worm it is.
i think giving a cat a small dose of ibuprofan would be ok like maybe 25-50 mg if he looks like he is in pain but take him to the vet tomm. and they can tell you for sure
he needs to go to the vet and mayy need to stay in to have iv antibiotics -my cat did. Don't give him brufen or anything, they are really sensitive to it and you'll kill him or put him in agony
It could be another wound besides the one on his mouth that caused the abscess, but that's what it is. You can't do anything except get him to the vet, and in the future don't wait a whole day when he's injured.
If he isn't neutered, get it done-it will cut down on the fighting. Look him over frequently for wounds and if you find one , clean it well-it may not abscess. If you do notice swelling and tenderness, go to the vet.
