Can Coffee and/or chocolate cause acne?

Question:
I am 35 and seem to have some sort of acne breakout. I drink about 2 -4 cups of coffee per day and also snack on chocolate frequently. I am thinking they can be the culprit?

What do you think?

Thanks.

Answers:
That is a fallacy, myth. Acne is caused by an inflammatory skin eruption occurring on the face, neck shoulders etc.. It's cause is unknown but involves bacterial breakdown of sebum, which is a normal secretion of the sebaceous glands of the skin, composed of keratin, fat and cellular debris. Combined with sweat, sebum forms a moist, oily acidic film that is mildly antibacterial and anti fungal and protects the skin against drying. Sebum breaks down into fatty substances, irritating the surrounding subcutaneous tissue. Most treatments include topical and oral antibiotics, topical vitamin A derivatives and many other. Best advice, see a dermatologist. It is easily treatable. Chocolate and coffee don't play a role in acne. If it did, I would be full of acne and I never had acne in my life.
I think chocolate is the culprit here, it happens to me when I suddenly start eating a load!

It might be worth checking for nut allergies. Chocolate often contains some form of nut traces. The spots could be a mild reaction and could be worth having an allergy test done. If you are allergic to nuts it will only get worse over time so get it checked out =)

Coffee on the other hand gives me massive headaches, so I do not drink it =)
No - it is a myth that normal use of chocolate or coffee cause acne ,it could be a factor if you way over indulge
Acne can be caused from a variety of reasons. Your diet is really just one small piece of the acne causing problems. Other factors include exercise, cosmetics, diet, hormones, hygiene, medications, shaving and stress
See a dermatologist as to the reason
No, those are just old wives tales. It could be stress, poor diet, poor hygiene, and many other things.
I am 30 and I still get acne, I asked my doctor the same thing and he recons they is no link between the two. I am not so sure, because when I have cut down on my chocolate intake my skin clears up. The main reason for spots and acne is bacteria (try not touching your face), and a slight hormone in balance.
If it has suddenly broke out now it might be one of two things:

1/ Acne
2/ Rash/Allergic reaction (shampoo, moisturizer etc)

Either way you should consult your GP.

Hope this helps;-]
it depends, you really believe that bullshit, its a myth
No. Anyone who told you otherwise is bullshitting you.
Duh, and let me guess you may sometimes wipe you hand on your face accidentally after you get done eating that candy bar. Well, you might as well give your acne a candy bar on its own.
I'm 39 and I been drinking coffee and eating chocolate since I know my self,, long time ago,, and I have not acne even when I was young, I thing is all depend of your body, some produce grease others not,,
No. (thank god). There is no food that will cause acne because acne isnt an allergic reaction. For most ppl it's genetic. When you get a pimple, it's because you pore gets clogged up with sebaum - a chemical that your skin produces. It's basically like oil. When that clogs the pore, your skin can breathe and your skin will attack the oil, causing the swelling (and sometimes the pus also known as white heads).
Coffee does dehydrate you, and your skin, and therefore your skin might produce more oil but was an avid coffee drinker, and I stopped drinking it so much but I still get breakouts. Maybe stress is causing your break outs. Is there a reason why you indulge in so much coffee and chocolate everyday? Stress will def give you acne. your best bet is to drink lots of water (to hydrate skin) and use a cleanser with acne med every day. I have also used clean and clear advantage everyday and it has worked miracles.
Yes, adult acne can be caused by coffee and/or chocolate consumption. Coffee stimulates the production of cortisol which promotes acne.
Chocolate and other sugars should be avoided.

Idea: cut out the coffee and all chocolate/sugars for a while.

Might suck at first but you'll see if your acne clears up.
Give it at least two weeks, don't run to the candy bar isle if your acne doesn't go away after not snacking on chocolate for two days.
