Dr. said my 3 yr old doesn't need a cast 4 a broken colarbone. Is that true? I'm afraid it won't heal right.
Question:
Answers:
A cast is never used to treat a broken collarbone, a sling is worn for 2-3 weeks...it takes about 12 weeks for it to heal completely.
take your son to a specialist to be certain. don't trust primary care or pedi. for everything, especially is you are concerned. its worth the expense just to put your mind at ease. good luck to your little one.
There is nothing you can do for a broken collar bone. The doctor is absolutely right.
Since your 3 year old is so young, he / she will heal very quickly.
Good Luck
H E Y ...Doctor is correct, there is usually nothing to do. Where would you put any kind of dressing? Due to the fact the child is so young, he'll heal quickly.....LATER
I broke mine at 2. Doc told my mom the same thing. My arm was wrapped to my body at chest level. Mine was never the same strengthwise. I'm 50 now. I'm surprised they haven't figured out a better way by now. Perhaps there is no better way.
It depends on the break, not every break requires a cast, and it is difficult to put a cast on the clavicle.
However, it doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.
I have a friend who broke her collarbone when she was young. It didn't heal right and now she has a lot a muscle pain related to it.
yea... thats true. there's no need for a cast for clavicle fractures.
it will be fine.
he might have put his arm in a sling, but no more is nessicary
plus dont you think it would be a little hard for them to put a cast on a collar bone?
if the doctor says he doesnt need one, he doesnt.
The doctors right. Actually 4 years ago my daughter broke her arm, but it was so high up( a little below the shoulder) they could not put a cast on her. It healed fine though.
Yes he is right .. the baby does not need a cast, even the elder ones do not need a cast, once their collar bone is broken. This bone needs " figure of eight " bandage in adolescents and elderly. Also triangular sling may be used.
Have faith in your doc...he is right.
Your Dr. is absolutely correct. As a teenager I broke both of mine on seperate occasions. Went to a Osteopath ( bone specialist ). He had me wear an arm sling for apx. 2 weeks, was healed in apx. 3 weeks. You 3 year old is producing new body cells at a very fast rate, he will heal very quickly.
I have seen this cast used on coller bones, but not needed.
Dr. can use a tube shaped gauze apx. 2-3 inch diameter and filled with plaster. The tube is then flattened and placed behind the neck, over the front of the shoulders, under the armpits, and then tied behind the back. Problem is, a 3 yer old may not keep his shoulders back in good posture while cast is setting/drying. Best bet here is leave it alone, your munchkin will heal fine. Remember, GOT MILK!!
my brother broke a collarbone as a child and had no cast. you would need a cast almost on the WHOLE upper part of your body. he did have a "brace" thing he wore that kept his shoulders pulled back and in proper alignment. there is really nothing else that can be done. if you are still concerned speak to an orthapedic for a second opinion
A cast is never applied for a broken collar bone. Sometimes a soft figure 8 splint is applied. More typically in small children it is not used. Some docs will put the child in an arm sling on the affected side for comfort only.
It will heal fine.
No, they don't cast a broken collarbone (clavicle). I have seen many docs use this form of splint though to keep the bone aligned. It's like a figure-8 thingy that you put over both shoulders and it goes around the back (kinda looks like something to make you avoid slouching your shoulders). Of course, that all depends on how bad the break is. Did your doc say something about a "greenstick" fracture? If so, that means basically they just cracked it and it WILL heal on it's own. This is the kind of break most kids get, due to their super-soft bones. When in doubt, get a second opinion!
-paramedic many years
Do do not need an actual cast for the collarbone itself. you amy need a figure 8 thing or a sling to keep the collarbone in place. If you're not happy with your current dr, go to a different dr.
