Valerian root is a great herbal remedy to help one get to sleep. It's sold in health food stores as well as supermarkets and stores like Walmart. Prices vary from place to place. It comes in capsules and has a pungent odor to it. Don't let that bother you tho as they really do work. Valerian root isn't addictive like normal sleeping pills and don't make you groggy when you wake up.

I hope this helps!
Hard excersize an hour before you go to bed. Relaxes the body...
Establish a routine of doing something very relaxing an hour before your bedtime. Don't do anything stressful in the room where you sleep. NEVER bring work in there. Make it a peaceful, relaxing area.

Keep a pen, pad, and flashlight next to your bed. I used to have trouble sleeping because I always felt that I was forgetting to remember something (LOL), but after I put that stuff next to the bed, if I woke up remembering something, I'd just turn on the flashlight, write it down, and go right back to sleep immediately.

Milk contains tryptophane, and it doesn't have to be warm, so either warm or cold milk will work as well to help you sleep. I'd say drink hot cocoa in the winter, and cold milk in the summer. Not too much sugar in that cocoa, though. Warm milk, if you can handle it, is good, but as I said, cold works just as well.

Remember the first thing, though, never do anything stressful in the room where you sleep. Keep it peaceful so it won't remind you of stressful events when you're trying to sleep.

Good luck. Pleasant dreams.

If you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep

Lying in bed awake can make you feel anxious and even less likely to fall asleep. If you can’t get to sleep within 15 or 20 minutes after you go to bed, or if you wake up in the night and can’t get back to sleep, get up and do something relaxing. It can help to

· Read something light or listen to soothing music in another room. To avoid over-stimulating yourself, keep the lights low.

· Drink a cup of warm milk. Research shows that milk contains an amino acid that may help you get to sleep. And the acts of heating the milk and drinking it slowly in a dim room can help you feel relaxed and sleepy.

· Write it down. If something stressful is keeping you awake, try unburdening your mind by writing it down. Some people find it helps to simply describe how they feel. Others find it helps to make a list of the things they’re worried about or that they need to do.

· Do deep-breathing or other relaxation exercises. Try inhaling as you count to five slowly, and exhaling as you reverse the count. Some people find it helpful to relax each part of their body in succession, starting with the right foot, right leg, right shoulder, right hand, and so on back down the left side.
Melatonin 3 mg nightly.
Valerian; take as directed on bottle.
Hops; take as directed.
As night progresses, turn more & more lights in your house off. This works with your body's natural sleep cycle.
Also, the minerals Calcium & Magnesium act as mild muscle relaxers & help you calm down & unwind.
You can go to the local health store a nd get melatonin. Its all natural www.melatonin.com
U can try some chamomile tea before u go to bed and see if that helps or u can try to go to bed earlier and not have no tvs or music on and no lights. but i found that 1 tylenol pm or advil pm, works like a charm with me and i sleep all nite. If u still are having trouble sleeping try and afternnoon nap or a morning nap and u may be able to catch up on some zzzz's . i hope this helps and take care...
Here's a great website that covers this topic. It's an innovative approach to insomnia & sleeping problems:

http://www.thesoundsleep.com
(Give it a minute to load...it has a short video.)

The guy who wrote it used to struggle with insomnia. I would at least take a look as it has lots of info.

You could try herbs but I would deal with curing the insomnia (or sleeping problem). If you don't deal with the cause, it may get worse. (Sorry..I know that sounds drab...I didn't mean for it to). I guess that I am saying that there is hope.

Good luck!!
