Question:
I have a hiatal hernia which has been getting a lot worse lately, cannot sleep due to pain. Recently I was prescribed Percocet for another injury (fractured hand), and I have found it really helps the hernia pain. I currently don't have insurance to cover a surgery for the hernia, would it be a bad idea to take a pain killer for the hernia until it can be fixed? I know there is a risk of dependence on the pills, and I am leery of it, but this is the most relief I've had from it in three months. I go and see my PCP on Monday for the hernia.
Answers:
If you are in a lot of pain and have the percocet from a presciption written for you, then I don't see a problem with
you taking them as directed. The problem is, though, I don't
believe that a doctor will actually write you a prescription for Hiatal Hernia pain. So, although I don't see you becoming dependant from some "left over" percocet that you have around the house, you may get used to relieving the pain and then will have no way to do so in the future.
Have you tried OTC meds at night to see if that helps? Like, Aleve Liquid Gels, or maybe one of the night time formulas?
Using something like that may be easier on you.
Good Luck, I hope you get the relief you need soon.
