Why can't I sleep or stay asleep?

You gave the answer yourself. You work out in the evening.
That means that you go against nature's will. Start working out earlier than you do or change your workout session so that you can do it in the morning.
After 6mm the body starts preparing for the night sleep. The body gradually starts lowering down it's temperature, the heart drops down heartbeat rate.
When at that time you start exercising you violate that body law. You increase heartbeat rate and temperature. Everything in you is fully functional but at the wrong time.
So it's a miracle you even can sleep.
Here are a few more tips to help you sleep easily :
- Work out as early as you can. Preferably in the morning where your body needs the extra energy.
- Take a shower before sleep time. Be sure that the water is in such a temperature that will help your body to lower the temperature, not raise it.
- Eat very light dinner ( a vegetables or fruits salad is prefered here )
- Boil some milk and mix it with a drop of honey (a teaspoon of it). Then drink it. Do this before you go to sleep.
- Leave your bedroom windows open a couple of hours before sleep so that fresh air will fill the room.
- Keep your pillows and blankets as clean as possible.
- Don't keep electronic devices near your head. I read once that the electromagnetic fields from digital / electronic devices disturb the human body and prevent it from calming down.
- Don't watch television before going to bed. Preferably do not watch t.v. movies that contain violence or images that may increase your appetite to stay awake ;-)
- Don't drink or smoke before going to bed (or in the bedroom). Both have to do with the brain and mess hormones and body temperature in a way that they interfere with sleep
- Try concentrating in your respiration while laying down to bed. Breathe normally with a tempo.
- Clear out your head from thoughts no matter what the problems are. Persuade yourself you want to sleep now and there is nothing that can disturb that thought.
- Don't wait anxiously to fall asleep. Sleep is a really naughty thing, like a child. When you are after it, it goes away. When you pretend that you don't care, it comes to you jealously :)
If those tips won't work, maybe you should do a check up. A blood test may show any chemical imbalances that may disturb your sleeping. I once faced a sleeping problem and after a checkup, the results showed a thyroid problem. Thyroid has to do with hormones as well.

Try before sleep listen to classic or soft music, or watch a very boring movie, or read couple book, this method work for me, or you can always take the easier way out (sleeping pill).
It may have something to do with your metabolism is speeding up.
Try sleeping in a different area. If you fall asleep more there than you know it's your mattress.
Shut your brain off. I have the same problem and the only resolution I came to other that heavy sleeping sedatives was to put a fan right by my head to drown out all my thoughts in my head that were keeping me from sleeping. You will get used to the fan in a week or so.
You have a sleeping disorder...insomnia. Consult a physician
One causative factor is the working out late at night. This workout increases your metabolism and does not allow you to properly fall asleep and stay asleep. For best results exercise should be done first thing in the morning.
I think you think too much and that makes you sleepless so try to take it easy and think that every thing is going to vanish. My suggistion is to not to take any pills or drink but stop thinking just before going to bed.

it depends, from your explanation it sounds like the work out at night might be part of whats keeping you up. Working out releases endorfins (sp?). which is a reaction in your body that gives you more energy and makes you feel good by doing so. And basically working out raises your heart rate, so with that combination it can make it hard to fall asleep. I'm not positive that this is your issue with sleep.. but its a good possibility. I would consider moving my workout to an earlier time if possible. Or if you dont do this already, plan to have a wind down time for yourself.
I work nights at a restaurant and run around all night and when I get home its really late... so I sit on the computer for about a half hour and thats my wind down... sometimes it can get the best of me and i find myself on YouQA.com .. hehemm... but you could also watch tv or read or do something that will make you wind down and release all the built up energy or thoughts from the day. Ive also found that laying down a while before you are supposed to sleep helps... creating a bed time routine of some sort. Perhaps try a tylenol pm or two if you get desperate, but dont get hooked, just use it till you can get used to the routine.. cus as any pills they are habit forming and i am unaware of its long term affects for long term users and i wouldnt want to suggest anything dangerous..

You definately have insomnia, however, do you feel tired during the day? Yoou might try to work out in the morning, instead of the evening. I would ask your doctor about Ambien CR.

Working out in the evening could be the cause of it. You're body may still be pumped and rearing to go at bedtime. Also, caffinated beverages can keep you awake if you're drinking a few hours before sleep. Avoid tea and coffee five hours before bedtime as they can accelerate your thought processes and cause your mind to be too busy while you're trying to sleep.
When you say that you are 'busy' during the day - do you mean physically busy? If you have a sit down job and you're body is constantly relaxed all day long that could lead to sleepless nights as well.
I used to have problems with thinking myself in circles (half awake) while trying to fall completely asleep. I would imagine things like swimming through a looping maze underwater trying to find a surface that I could come up and take a breathe in or other annoying things like that. My problem was lack of physical activity during the day and coffee at night.
