Recovering from a sprained ankle.?

Question:
I sprained my ankle about a month and a half ago and I'm wondering if I can engage in the level of physical exercise I engaged in before my ankle injury. The ankle is still somewhat swollen but when I run, I feel no pain in the ankle.

Answers:
yes you can...but don't do it right away..to heal a sprained ankle, i would advise you to:

R- rest your ankle
I- ice it
C- Compress your ankle with Ace bandage or any cloth..but not too tightly to decrease circulation to your foot.
E- elevate leg (put pillows under your foot when resting)..

and take your motrin or advil (whichever) to decrease the swelling. give it like 2-4 weeks before you see improvements.. then exercise it little by little until you think you're good to exercise the way you used to...good luck!
I'd say this depends on how badly you sprained it and how hard you used to exersize.

I once sprained my ankle very badly and it was well over a year before I could run again.

Start slow, stop and see your doctor if it hurts.
use your judgement.. just do what feels ok.. if it hurts then stop.. ice it after everything.. do some stretching and some strengthening.. that should help out lots.
I think if this occurred 6 weeks ago and you have no pain then it would be reasonable to start exercising again BUT your ankle may not be as strong as the other so it would be a good idea to support it / strap it before you begin .. you did not mention what exercises you were going to recommence but you may find the ankle is a bit stiff if you have not exerted yourself for a while so be careful.
