in my own experience it didn't hurt at all actually getting it done but for about 3-5 days after you tongue swells up , not like it gets huge or anything just a little swelling but if you drink alot of frozen drinks and suck on ice it helps it go down quicker it looks cool but i took mine out after about 5 years when i was eating a sandwich and bit down on the steel ball and broke my tooth , they don't give you a bigger gauge to start off with , they give you a longer barbell to start off with for the swelling then after the swelling goes down you can put a shorter barbell in it and if it done right you shouldn't have any problems unless you eat like a pig like i evidently do.
pain rating is 8 and lasts about 7-10 days
Pain rating is about 5 if you rate 10 as natural childbirth. It sucked. Took about a week before swelling went down and I talked with a lisp for months. I took it out years later because the angle made the bottom ball click on my bottom front teeth and errode my gum tissue. SSOOOO not worth it! My husband hated it by the way, just in case you care about the physical side of it.
Really nobody can tell you the pain level... for everybody it's different. From my own personal experience, it doesn't hurt at all, it's just the initial shock of holy crap I actually did it. It's difficult to eat because your tongue swells up.. mine was swollen really bad.. but it didn't hurt...
The pain was about a 5, and the only problem came at night when my tongue would swell, and throb, they give you a gage big enough to accommodate the swelling, it was not hard to eat @ all,but frozen drinks were the best, after two weeks you go back and get a smaller gage in your mouth.
My daughter had hers done a couple of months ago when she turned 16. She already had her ears, tragus and belly button pierced. She reckoned it was the most painful thing she has ever had done, including having her tonsils out. Her tongue swelled up, she couldnt talk properly for about 3 days, could only drink fluids and soup for about a week and was on regular analgesia. She was swilling with mouthwash every few hours too and had trouble sleeping because it kept waking her up. But apart from all that she was fine. Im sure she would give it a pain rating of at least 9 out of 10. And now all she does is play with it and click it against her teeth, I'm sure she will have no tooth enamal left before long.
