It depends what area you injured -
If it was a ligament (connects bone to bone) or a tendon (connects mucsle to bone) it could take a while to heal. These areas of your body do not get as much blood as your muscles or vital organs. This means slower healing. Also, these are very sensitive areas (especially around joints). Here are some tips to help if you didn't try it already:
- Rest = dont overdue it...sounds like you have already tried this
- Ice = ONLY for 20 min max at a time. This helps reduce swelling and helps with the pain. You can alternate 20 min on and 20 min off for a couple hours if the pain is bad
- Compression = wrap it up (start from the bottom and wrap with an ace bandage or joint stabilizing device up towards the top of the injury)
- Elevation = Try and rest the injury above your heart. This helps reduce swelling too
It has been three weeks, so you can also try heat INSTEAD of ice and see if this helps you. Also, any kind of joint injury takes at least a few weeks to heal. If it doesn't feel better soon please see a doctor.
Some years ago, I injured a shoulder, bench pressing. 18 months of aching later, I finally went to the doctor. I got a month of ultrasound, hear & manipulation & it was cured.
Problem with weights, if you damage a ligament, it doesn't seem to heal like muscle. I injured a ligament that runs up from beside my upper tricep and runs over my shoulder, sitting in a groove in the bone. But with the injury, it was out of the groove & that inflamed it more.
So for you - I'd recommend you do see a doctor.
BTW - I've had torn cartlidge round the back of my ribs, since last Xmas & it is only just healing after 8 months.
