Question:
i have been diagnosed by my orthopedic that i have fracture on the base of my fifth metatarsal bone. so he advised me to have a surgery where he need to put screw on my injury. so i just want to know what is the long term effect of this injury if it is not surgically repaired? do i really need a surgery for this kind of injury even thou i am not a professional athlete?

Answers:
Having an avulsion fracture means you had an injury to your muscle that actually tore off a piece of your bone. Since it is in your foot, this could cause problems with your walking. It makes a difference which muscle was damaged, and where on the metatarsal bone it occurred. I would ask your doctor what the consequences would be if you did not have it repaired vs. getting the surgery. If you are walking funny on your foot, this could lead to problems in your ankle, knees and hips. I would discuss your concerns with your orthopedic physician.
I would just let it heal over time if I were you----it seems like an extra thing having the surgery that will only prolong your recovery. feel better soon!
Frequently called a Dancer's or Jones fracture. Muscles attach to that little boney piece and will keep it from adequately healing. Sorry, but you will get much better results if it is pinned or screwed back. In this case, surgery is probably necessary, but remember, I do my best diagnosis without seeing a patient. So get a real 2nd opiunion from either a podiatrist or orthopedic specializing in lower extremities if possible. Be sure to bring your films with.
