You're experiencing fasciculations, commonly known as muscle twitches.
They're most commonly brought on by stress and/or repeated muscle strains. The vast majority of the time they are harmless. However, there is no definitive answer to how long they will last. In some people episodes can last for months, but for most it will be a matter of days.
For some, it develops into a syndrome known as Benign Fasciculation Syndrome (BFS) which is a harmless affliction that affects many people, typically causing them frequent muscle strains and difficulty getting a full exercise regimen. Some people with BFS suffer no adverse complications at all. People suffering from BFS live full, productive lives, however; they just have a little more difficulty than "normal" people.
You can decrease their frequency by reducing your stress level and taking more time to relax. If you're having trouble reducing stress and relieving anxiety, you may consider asking your doctor for advice.
This probably isn't going to help your anxiety level any, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention one other VERY rare possibility. Fasciculations are also a symptom of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. But fasciculations common to ALS are "aftershocks" of a dieing nerve ending. People who experience these aftershocks have already had other symptoms in the same regions, such as extreme weakness and loss of coordination. Since you reported neither of these symptoms, I highly doubt your twitching is a result of ALS.
If the twitches continue to cause you a great deal of anxiety, you can ask you doctor to refer you to a neurologist. From there it's simple testing to tell you if your twitching is a result of BFS or something more serious. Basically they'll see how well your nerves respond to a very small jolt of electricity, as BFS will cause absolutely no damage to your nervous system, if the electricity flows through smoothly, they will conclude you do not have a serious disease.
Good Luck, God Bless.
I've experienced this kind of strange muscle twitch in my legs before, but it was only for a few minutes. Were you exercising before? It has only happened to me a couple times in my life, usually after I've been walking or running. I think it might be your muscles are restless, try stretching those muscles or going for a light jog. If it continues, you should probably see a doctor.
this symptom is called Tremors. does it go away when you sleep or get worse as the day goes on?
They prescribe sedatives to help this I get them but I have MS. do you have other symptoms??
A magnesium deficiency often causes muscle twitching and spasms.
