A question for those who successfully managed to quit smoking?

Cold turkey. That's how I finally quit after trying 4 times. All you need is to really, really want to quit. You need to be dedicated. I used my children as my motivation and determination.
getting pregnant lol
i had my last cigarette on july 24th 2006 at 430pm at 435pm the little blue line appeared confirming i was pregnant and i haven't touched one since! (sorry if i sound smug but am sooooo pleased with myself i had previously tried and failed)
i quit cold turkey..best thing i have done (second to my son of course :))
i quit smoking cold turkey.
the worse side effect i had was it felt like some one stuck a knife in my stomach and was twisting it in circles.
I tried nicorette gum and the patch, neither worked for me.
Replacing nicotine with...err.. nicotine is a silly idea anyways.
I was only successful after quitting cold turkey, with a bit of planning. I devoted an entire week of vacation to use as my quitting time. The first week is hell, and I slept as much of that time as i could (you're not craving when you're sleeping ).
The reason i took off for a week is because it's easier to quit when you're not frustrated or dealing with stress at work.
i used nicorette chewing gum for a few days but i dont think i really needed it. it was just a bit of back up. i went from 40 a day to none without problems because i truly believed i would never smoke again. i bought a load of boiled sweets and nuts etc . things to do instead of smoking. i had no side effects and didnt get aggressive. in my mind i was a non smoker. if you can convince yourself of that fact you wont have any problems. ive been a non smoker for 6 years and i love it
I got in touch with the Roy Castle foundation and they were brilliant. I used the plastic cigarette and will power and know I will never smoke again after 2 years. Most of it has got to come through you though Good luck
Strong will!
I quit 2 years ago after smoking for 40 years , and it was my 3rd attempt, I used nicotine chewing gum at first, also multi B vitamins helped with nerves and stress. I also found deep breathing helpful. The main thing is never give up giving up.
I had Laser Therapy over two years ago and haven't looked back. I opted for this because I have no will power. I've had no side effects, sore throats, colds, chest infections NADA. It cost me £100 (think cost has gone up slightly) - but it was the best money I've spent in my life.
Doesn't matter which route you go - you REALLY MUST WANT TO STOP - or it won't work! I was actively looking forward to my first appointment - and didn't need to go back for my third. My husband went last year for the same but he really didn't want to stop - his idea was if SHE can do it, then it's no problem. He's still puffing away!
I tried the patch - didn't work for me at all.
I went cold turkey and it wasn't fun, but it worked. The trick for me was not to throw out all the cigarettes - I carried cigarettes with me. That way I didn't feel like something was being taken away from me - but rather that I was making a conscious decision every time I wanted a cig to do the right thing for my body/health by not succumbing to the craving.
I don't know why but psychologically it made all the difference. That was ten years ago.
Occassionally I will smell/see someone lighting up and feel that old craving but I know I'll never give in because I never want to have to go through the process of quitting again - plus I think about all the reasons I quit in the first place.
Good luck to you. Know that you will feel and look so much better when you're free from cigarettes. You'll never have to deal with that stale smell in your clothes and hair again. You'll also have a lot more money in your pocket. It's great for your self esteem to conquer this addiction. You can do it.
I quit 3 weeks and 4 days. I started taking Chantix a week before my quit date. So far it has worked well. I still have cravings but fewer and fewer everyday. I have found out that no craving last for more than 3 minutes, so just watch the clock and you will be amazed. I smoked for more than 30 years and smoked close to 2 packs a day. If I can do this anyone can. I quit strictly for the money, I know that is sad that it wasn't for my health, but honestly it wasn't. So far I have saved $200. Not a bad start to a nice vacation to celebrate being a non-smoker. Oh! every night I tell myself " You are a non-smoker" sounds kinda hokie but it is working. Good Luck I know you can do this.
quit cold turkey. i was driving and listening to a program about how much it cost a week, month, and year to smoke. i was cured. i have better things to do with my money than to slowly and methodically kill myself. no problem with withdrawals.
the best way to quit is to not "finish that last pack" (for example yo yo dieting, when they say i'll start my diet sunday.)
if you want to quit - do i right now - don't put it off, or else you will never quit.
some things to ease the withdrawal
1. have support from a friend, boyfriend/girlfriend, family
2. buy some nicorette gum so wean your body off of nicotine
3. keep yourself busy, & find time to go away some place. with someone who can cheer you up or make you laugh.
4. STAY AWAY from smokers or situations where there would be smokers.
5. to help with the oral fixation, buy lollipops, gum, sucking candy, ice.
6. seriously find a new hobby of some sort, like going to the gym everyday, biking, hiking, planting, anything "new".
just remember the first 2 weeks are the worst!
tell yourself that YOU are in control, that is what separates you from animals. your FREE WILL.
Im nearly 2 years clean!! - 2nd to hardest thing i have ever done (first being giving birth!)
Good Luck on this journey!
I gave up smoking with Nicquitin Clear patches id tried other patches in the past but i had terrible nightmares with them .
I also tried tablets from the Dr but i just carried on smoking
I have been a x smoker now for 21 months
You really have to want to give up smoking for anything to have a chance to succeed .
When you are craving get moving to take your mind of a cigarette .
Walk up the stairs , put the kettle on do anything to keep busy while you are craving . Remember the craving only lasts about a minute or two it just feels like hours
You wont be sorry you gave it up
You have to really want to be a non smoker or it wont work.i used nicorette patches and was fine i did take up a hobby to take my mind off things, but nothing stressfull.
I smoked from the age of 13 til 26 the whole time thinking I'd be able to stop when I WANTED to. Then that time came and no matter how much I told myself not to smoke I kept going back.
One day at work, my boss asked me if I wanted to quit smoking and my response was "who doesn't?" That day was to change my life... forever.
I am now nearly 33 and haven't had a cigarette since 2 weeks after my boss asked me that question. How? I read a book! It was that simple and you can continue to smoke while you're reading the book... it's by Allen Carr and if you WANT to quit check out his website below.
Quitting smoking was the easiest (yes easiest) and most empowering thing I've ever done. I couldn't have done it without the book.
I used Chantix which is a prescription medication. I had tried lots of things in the past that didn't work. I haven't smoked in over 5 months. It is so easy to quit with Chantix. I would recommend it for anyone.
