Disk Herniation?
Question:
He is in good shape - works out - 39 years old.
Answers:
Take the shot! I hear that's what the NFL players do when they get injured. He runs the risk of getting even more injured and not knowing it, so if I were you, I'd get professional advice.

My doctor thought I had this (which I ended up not having, different story though), so he said that I needed the steroids both shot and swallowable (for about a week), and then I needed it to be drained for it to heal because the steroids weren't working. Suggested physical therapy.
I don't know how long it takes to heal, because I never ACTUALLY had it, but I do know the body has to reabsorb the spinal fluid, to heal. And because everyone heals faster or slower, it is hard to say how long. Draining will help speed up the process, especially if he is in a lot of pain.
That's the best I can do...and you can go to www.spine-health.com
