This may be the weirdest thing you ever hear?

Question:
Ever since I was like 2 years old, and I am 16 now, I have PICKED my belly button. Yes, you heard it correctly. So, We'll say about 14 years or so. I pick it like everywhere I go. At night, at school, during the day (discreetly when I am not at home) and sometimes when the urge is so bad, I do it through my shirt!! So, I was just wondering what I can do to stop!? I am getting to the point that I am worried I am going to get some sort of like stomach infection or like something. It's all like scabby and gross and like weird. It's an innie, so you can't really tell. But, if you have any ideas or concerns or anything please help me. It can get really annoying and like embarrasing. Thanks so much <33

Ok, so here's the problem. You have a behavior that you have done for so long, you can't stop, it is a habit and you do it without even thinking about it.

So the question is..,..Do you really want to stop? Is it affecting your life in an adverse way? Sounds like it isn't a huge deal, I never heard of anyone getting a belly button infection from picking too much...If it is bugging you that much, then it might be time to alter that behavior.

You shouldn't need to see a doctor unless you think there might be an infection. People have little habits all the time. I bite my nails constantly, so there is a similarity there.

You are picking for some reason, to keep your fingers busy, to feel your belly button, anxiety,...there can be a ton of different reasons. The idea is to find out why, and attack that side of the problem...

Whatever you do, DON'T try to substitute something else to pick besides your belly button, like a bracelet. This isn't stopping the behavior, but transferring it. Eventually you will have to stop picking at the bracelet and won't be able to stop.

here are some things you can try.

wrap a string around the finger that you use to pick at it, this may remind you to stop.

Try to keep your hands busy doing other things...

Chart when you do it. Is there a pattern? Are you more likely to do it at certain times of the day?

Reward yourself with something - Say if I can go the whole day without picking, I'll get a mocha...or something else that you really want.

Have other people remind you. Talk to your family, though it might be embarrassing, tell them to swat your hand every time you pick. This will become annoying, but it is effective.

Hope this helps some! :-)
see a health professional
u could get it pierced, then it will hurt too much to touch, or u could put something over it...bandaid or patch, i dont know, thats kinda of a bad habbit to kick since its not going anywhere
Yes, in doing that you push the dirt deeper and deeper into your belly button and now only time will tell when you will have an infection. I suggest you get checked out by a doctor.
first of all gross
2nd- cover ur belly button with duct tape
um... I don't really think that will give you an infecion, but if it's getting all scabby and gross i would stop.
just make it look like you are itching your stomach sorry it is a habbit for you now!
put a couple of bandaids over it. When you go to pick, they remind you to stop.
You could try to put a band-aide (maybe with the antibiodics on it) so it can help your scabs and keep you from picking at it.

Or you can get something to cover your belly button and tape it so that you can't pick at it.

Maybe if this doesn't work you should see a doctor.

If you ever see a sign of infection tell your parents or go to the doctor right away.
either cut your fingers off or duck tape your stomach thats all i could think of
This is indeed a new fetish !! Would suggest you talk to a professional about the problem. I am not a medical professional , nor do I intend to give advice !! 33
ok here's what you have to do. you've got to become afraid of your belly button. You need to tell yourself there is a monster or something living in there and if you put your finger inside then the monster will bite your finger. you've got to really believe this for it to work. I know it sounds so stupid but if you can make yourself believe this you will be cured. This technique is normally used on young children but there are some cases where it has worked with adults. You could also try hypnotism.
This sounds like a nervous habit like biting your nails and I bet you do this unconciously too. I would try to put a big bandaid over it to remind yourself when you touch it that your not supposed to pick it. I would also clean it well dry it real good and put triple antibiotic ointement on it before you put the bandage on. If this doesnt help you need to talk to your doctor and ask for help with this. It may end up infected and you dont want that. Good luck.
Well...put a belt on around your middle with the strap over the offended navel and wear mittens for awhile.
thats kinda weird, maybe start picking your nose so itll take your mind off it
go 2 a doctor
Well it is a bit weird but if you want to stop you can. You just ave to find something else to do with your hands.
I started biting my nails as soon as had teeth and picked at them b4 i had teeth. When I was 17 I decided it had to stop and I started polishing my nails and caring for them and dis my mums at the same time and grew them long.
I would suggest that you start by putting a sticking plaster over your navel and then you find something else to pick at when your distracted. It wont feel right or satisfying at first but you have to stick at it.
Think what your parner must think if he sees see a scabby diseased looking stomach. Take pride in your appearance generally - your belly button is part of you so cherish it - when it is healed where a jewel in it and go belly dancing.
Good luck
It may be scabed over because of you picking it. Try to fight the urge to pick at it, because if the scab is open and reaveals the wound it could become infected or it could leave a terrible scar. But here's one tip from you prenting from picking, try putting scotch tape over your belly button so that everytime you try to pick at it, you won't be able too. Hope my advice helps you, lots of luck blackrose :)
my mom says that ur belly button is connected to like all ur intestins and stuff, and that u can really hurt ur self, i used to pick at my belly button too, until the fear of hurting myself set in, so i stopped, just think something really bad is going to happen to u if u keep on picking at it
You may be suffering from compulsive skin picking (CSP), or dermatillomania. No, you're not weird or gross. You are doing it to relieve stress, tension, and anxiety. There is a risk of skin infection if you continue, so you would benefit from understanding this condition and what you can do to address it.

This is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), i.e., the people who perform small actions repeatedly in an attempt to relieve their anxieties. Repetitive motions help some people decrease their stress, and this is what you're doing.

There aren't many resources on dermatillomania on the Internet. You might try this girl's website: http://facepick.tripod.com/

You may also want to do some indepenent research on the subject, now that you know what it's called medically.
