I broke mine 2 y ago. Had surgery and plates/pins to repair.
When you say vertical, I hope you are not meaning you are walking on it. If it has only been 3 weeks you should still be on crutches and not have weight on it. If you are trying to walk on it, that could be the problem.
If you are on crutches, and it hurts, try bending the knee holding it up a little higher behind you when you walk, or if you are sitting, it may just be that you need to elevate it more. Mine used to hurt if I sat and tried to put it on the floor; if I put it on a pillow on a footstool or box it was fine. Gravity keeps the fluids in and makes it swell. When it swells, it hurts worse (and can do more damage).
Ice and elevate it are your best 2 things to do.
Good luck and I hope you heal fast!
I broke my ankle on a parachute jump and it was the one of most painful thing that I have ever endured.I am saying that in context with also having an ulcer in the intestine that ate through the wall. That is number one in my pain experience.

Breaking my ankle is number two.I had to have the bone screwed back together and it was traumaticly painful during healing.IT HURT!
That thing swelled and I was eating Motrins. But,that is completely normal with that injury.

If the bone is healing well, just ride it out.You can go to the doctor, but if the bone is set correctly, there is nothing else to be done.Get a big bottle of Motrin, another one of Tylenol and make yourself comfortable.
The broken bone is in control right now,not you.

When you sit down, always prop your foot up.If you sit at a desk or table, find a way to prop it up on the desk.It helps.
