They will give you medicine in your IV line to put you to sleep and it is a warm fuzzy feeling. You will wake up in recovery and feel sleepy but fine. Once you have urinated and drank something you should be ready to go home if it is day surgery. They will make 4 tiny inscisions in your knee to do the surgery so you won't be able to see the scars. I am not sure about the pain but they will give you a prescritpion for pain medicine before you leave the hospital. Since you are 17 PLEASE request that they tell you everything they tell your mother. This is YOUR knee surgery not hers and they should be talking to you as well as to your mother.
At 17 while it's young to have surgery, your recovery rate will be better than someone older than you. Yes, you will be off your feet for awhile, but they may give you a cast or a brace so that you don't put pressure on your knee while it's healing. Bone & cartilage tend to take time to heal, and I honestly don't know how long it will be before you'll be walking normally. Before surgery, they put you to sleep with anesthetics (usually, either in gas form in a mask over your face or an IV in your arm), and it doesn't hurt. When you wake up, you'll be in a bed with something on your knee holding it in place, and you'll be over the scary part. Then you have to just heal. That's the part that take the longest.

But why don't you speak with either your mother or your doctor yourself and get some of these answers yourself and you won't be so scared.
I had my first knee surgery when I was 16. AND I am having extensive ankle surgery next week, so I feel all of your anxiety.

They will give you an IV so that they can administer an antibiotic and the anesthesia. They may have you count back from 10 (I never made it past 8). One second you will be awake and the next second you will be waking up. It feels almost instantaneous to you. If you feel pain when you start to come around, let your nurse know and she can give you something to help it. Just take a deep breath and relax. I know you are nervous, but try to get a good nights sleep the night before. You probably won't be able to eat or drink anything past midnight on Thursday, so make sure you have a good dinner. Remember that everyone there is there to help you and if you have any pain or fears, talk to them. You will probably not have to spend the night either.

Good luck. And remember, when this is all over, you won't have the pain or clicking anymore. And that is a wonderful feeling.
No worries...I had this done twice once at 15 and again at 17. The procedure is pretty common. You will leave the hospital the same day. Pain will be there but bearable. You will go to sleep and wake up just fine. Proabably takes about 3 hours for the surgery...longer to wake up from the anesthesia. I doubt they will cut open the whole knee...most likely scope it which leaves tiny little scars, hardly noticable. The worst part for me is waking up...they keep the recovery rooms very cold to lessen the chance of bacteria in the room. But when you wake up they will put a warm blanket over you to warm you up. Also, the anesthesia made me a little sick to my stomach. I puked the first time but not the second.
Basically, you don't have much to worry about. When you are fully recovered your knee will feel like new. It is definately worth it. Good luck!
Hi, my Dad has had 11 surgeries and 2 joint replacements, if you have torn cartilage, they will prob do it arthroscopic, making 3-4 small nicks to insert the camera light and tools to remove it. tape ya up with butterfly bandages, and prob a few weeks to recover with PT ect. good luck.
