Double bypass?

Question:
Hi
My dad had a double bypass about 6 weeks ago.He is in this early 70.What should he be doing to get better? He is also very down (before the op and after)is this because of his heart trouble?

Answers:
I think it would be important to eat well. Omega oils have shown to be helpful in preventing heart disease, these can be found in cod liver oil and walnuts among other things. He should start going for short gentle walks lots of short walks instead of one big one. Also depression and major illness go hand in hand he has been through it a bit health wise, but the walks and the omega 3 will help him with his depression, as well.
He needs to exercise but to start low and go slow. this will increase the endorphines known as "happy hormones" and also exercise his heart as well. I would try walking first and then trying golf etc later on.
Sometimes before ops like this a person can do very little before the angina (cramping chest pains) starts. This can cause frustration and depression. When he realises that his pain is not as bad he will come around. So in a sense yes top that question.
First I hope Dad is coming on well.
Be guided by his consultant with regard to his level of exercise etc, overdoing it may be detrimental.
The nursing staff should be able to help with the way he is feeling. If he was a very active man in his early years he could be feeling down because of his immobility and the mere fact that he has been ill. Good luck to you both.
Hope you dad is feeling better after his op,I had this done in 2000 and haven't looked back,Just gentle exercise at first and things will improve as example last year piloted a Tiger Moth aircraft,Good Luck.PAX.
