Broken foot?!?!?

Question:
I have broken my 5th metatarsal (the bone the connects the pinky toe to your heal). In 2 weeks I have a follow up with my doctor. This will be 4 weeks since my injury. I'm just wondering if he might tell me that I can start fading off the boot instead of wearing it all the time. Does this happen?

Answers:
At 4 weeks post injury, you are probably not going to get out of the boot just yet. The general rule and magic number for fracture healing is 6 weeks. However, the base of the 5th metatarsal can be a difficult fracture, and sometimes takes longer to heal.

Most likely he will take X-rays to see how well it is healing, and then want to see you back in another couple weeks. If it is healing well, he might have you start taking your foot out and doing range of motion exercises, but probably not walking on it just yet.

Good luck!
I broke the top of my foot (talus) and was in a cast for 6 weeks, boot for 4 and then an ankle brace for 4. So I do think they move you out of them as soon as you are ready. I would ask him before you do anything but if you feel like you are ready, I think he may agree. Good luck, I can totally relate!
