Why does it feel good to 'crack' your neck, especially when you have a crick in your neck?

Question:
Sometimes my neck/ back locks up, and I have seen a chiropracter from time to time. But especially in my neck, if it feels very locked up, i will sometimes move or be doing something, and it 'cracks'. When it does this there is extreme relief, and the crick goes away. Can someone please explain why, and what's going on?

Answers:
It relieves the pressure built up in the spine.
