Knee issues?

Question:
I am 16 years old and I have been playing soccer for 11 years now. About 4 years ago I was in the middle of a game when all the sudden my knee just gave out on me. Ever since it has been giving me a tremendous amount of pain and alot of issues. I had to skip out the past couple season because it just progressivly has gotten worse. We HAVE gone to an orthopedic and got an x-ray and MRI and he said it was an open growth plate and would close within a year and sent me off with 2 months of physical therapy. That was about 3 years ago and nothing has changed. The symptoms are twitching, swelling, retaining fluid, and varied levels of pain.We went to the family doc about a month ago and they are stumped and advised us to get a second opinion asap (the app. is next month) but I was just curious as to what the YouQA.com community thinks...

Answers:
i too am 16 and have played soccer since i could practically walk... last season i tore my acl so i know how important your knees are... you might want to have another mri scan because they dont always show everything...
when i had an mri after my injury it only showed an acl tear but after i got into surgery they saw meniscus tears too.
i would reccomend going back to an orthepedic dr. and let them know the pt didnt help.
hope its nothing serious 8)
Sounds like Osgood-Schlatter's disease but it could be a number of things.
An open growth plate, in of itself, should not have been painful. It simply meant you were still growing. Perhaps there was another finding on your MRI but the surgeon wanted to delay surgery until your growth plate closed? (to avoid damaging it). My guess is that there was a misunderstanding as to what your actual problem was. It would certainly be appropriate to follow up with the person who saw you a few years ago...but a second opinion doesn't hurt either.
