Question:
Ok, so tomorrow I go see my doctor for surgery consoltation (sp?) I'm 14 years old and I've played volleyball since 4th grade and this year (my freshman year) my shoulder began to sublux, and it got so bad to the point i could pop it in and out. so i have a bunch of loose joints that won't hold it in place and it KILLS everytime i play, and i play varsity for a 4a school so it's pretty intense. i went through 1 yr of pt and now i'm entering my sophmore year and it hasn't gotton better and i need surgery. i was just wondering if anybody went through it before? does it hurt bad? what happens after surgery, do you stay the night, do you have to wear a sling? i'll be getting my school permit cause i just got a car, but will i be able to drive after surgery? sorry, i'm so full of questions, and i'm really scared cause i'm out of the sport i love for a year and i already had colleges looking at me...
Answers:
The surgery is outpatient, meaning you go in, they do the surgery and you leave a few hours later. Hopefully you are not having a Thermal Capsulorrhaphy or capsular shrinkage...that surgery has mixed long term outcome. A better surgery is where they use anchors in your shoulder to tighten up the capsule around your shoulder. You will have to wear a sling for 3-4 wks while it heals, and you will NOT be able to drive in the first 4 wks. You will have about 3-4 months of PT to rehab but if you put a lot of effort into the rehab you should be fine after the surgery and better than before. Good luck, feel free to message me if you have other questions.
