I sprained mine in my sleep 2 weeks ago, still a little sore, but it was unbearable! Vicodin didn't even help, but, Alieve did..I took 2 at first...Good luck!
It sounds like your body is reacting to stress. What happens is your neck muscles, known as the tension triangle ( from your shoulders to your forehead), tense up during from psychological pressure (stress). Which is very similar to when you get in a car accident and you get whiplash.
"When muscles tighten from severe stress - the kind that makes your heart race, your skin perspire and your mouth dry up - they are part of a primitive physiological reflex that puts the body on guard for danger."
Going to the doctor may be a good idea as a last resort. If you are having a hard time coping with stress at work then definitely go to a doctor. Because he may have some advice or aide to help you. But if this is a one time thing.. Taking anything really doesn't seem like it would be necessary. I would recommend taking a bath.. Soaking with a warm towel or a heating pad on your shoulders or around your neck. Take some ibu profen, advil or aleve. They are anti-inflammatories and will help will the swelling in your muscles and help with pain. You may also treat yourself and go get a massage it's good for the body, mind and soul. :-)
I was in an accident last march and had a lot of muscular damage and I absolutely love icy hot. The cream is sometimes a pain and really messy.. But the patches are awesome and I could use them at work. Try using some relaxing lotions with lavender or mint. Do some meditating or yoga. Just try and relax your mind and eventually your body will follow.
Good luck.. I hope all goes well..
